Quton Diversifies into Maize Seed Production

One of Malawi’s leading cotton seed suppliers, Quton Malawi Limited, a subsidiary of Mahyco International Private Limited of India, is diversifying its work by going into the production and distribution of maize seed.

Quton Malawi Limited has introduced on the market MIM 4594 maize seed.

Speaking during a field visit conducted at Nankhaka Irrigation Scheme which is under Chingonthi Extension Planning Area in Kanengo in Lilongwe on Wednesday, Quton Malawi General Manager John Lungu said the new variety, which is early maturing with high potential yield, will help in ensuring food security in the country.

Lungu said MIM 4594 matures in 90 days, can produce 120 bags of maize per acre and can produce about six tons on a hectare.

He says the new variety is ideal in the wake of reduced rains occasioned by the effects of climate change.

Chairperson of Namfunga Irrigation Scheme Bonnex Mphande says the new variety which they have tried in their fields, is showing huge potential.

Mphande says MIM 4594 has proved to be a promising piece in both rain fed and irrigation farming.

He says he will grow the variety on a large scale.

“This variety is sweet and high yielding. On one acre piece of land, one can harvest about 100 bags of maize. It is ideal especially now that there are climatic shocks,” said Mphande.
