CDEDI Engages Judiciary on Sugar Prices Injunction

The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has asked the chief justice to intervene on an injunction that was granted to Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc in 2023 sparing the sugar manufacturing company from prosecution for unfair trade.

CDEDI executive director Slyvester Namiwa said this after meeting judiciary officials on the need  to expedite the process of vacating the injunction arguing Malawians are suffering due to exorbitant prices of the commodity which is also scarce on the market.

"We believe vacating the injunction could help stabilize sugar prices as most Malawians are now struggling to access the commodity due to exorbitant prices," said Namiwa.

Malawi judiciary Registrar Kondwani Banda has confirmed about the meeting but declined to give details on a matter which is still in court.

"We have submitted the CDEDI request from to the office of the Chief Justice for action," Banda added.

In 2023, the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) found Illovo sugar company guilty of unfair trading after it was discovered that the sugar manufacturing company was inflating sugar prices.

The country is experiencing sugar scarcity with some traders taking advantage of the situation with an average price of  K4,000 per 1 kilogram packet.
