Amid growing concerns of poor implementation of substandard development projects in the country’s councils, Malawi Building and Civil Allied Traders Association (MABCATA) and National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) have introduced a training course to equip local contractors with skills.

MABCATA Training Director, Lazzie Phambana, says most contractors have been implementing substandard projects due to lack of technical skills for construction; hence, the training.

Phambana said the training course which will be administered at Soche Technical College has been designed to assist those in the construction industry to implement durable and reliable projects.

"The  initiative comes at a time, people in the country are  accusing contractors of implementing substandard projects such as  bridges, school blocks  just  to mention but a few," said Phambana.

Phambana disclosed this during a stakeholder meeting which the association held in Phalombe district.

Alick Nthini, one of the officials for the department of public works in Phalombe, commended the two organizations for the initiative, saying it will go a long way in curbing poor implementation of substandard projects.
