Balaka District Council says will from now on dedicate one day each month in which employees and willing residents will be cleaning the town as one way of ensuring cleanliness.

Council spokesperson, Mary Makhringa, says this is a brainchild of new District Commissioner, Emmanuel Bambe.

"We have launched this cleanup campaign with the district commissioner and council staff leading in sweeping and refuse collection, among others," said Makhringa.

Bambe, council staff, the civil society organisations and the business community joined the clean-up campaign launch by sweeping, slashing and waste management among others.

Chairperson for a network of Balaka civil society organisations, Charles Sineta, says this is a welcome development and has already called upon all members to support this noble cause.

"Almost all civil society organisations have expressed interest to make sure it is a success,” he said.
