Fire Guts down Old Limbuli Market
At least 43 shops at the old Limbuli market in Mulanje district have been destroyed by fire in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The market committee chairperson, Anthony Limited, disclosed to zodiak Online that the incident occure at around 1 o’clock in the morning.
“Shops that were selling motorcycles, bicycles, mattresses, cloths, groceries and other valuable goods have all be destroyed by fire,” said Limited.
Amos Bwanali, a guard at one of the destroyed shops said he saw sparks of fire from the pole before fire broke suddenly.
“At night, we had on and off electricity and while on the veranda of the shop I was guarding, I saw sparks of fire at the ESCOM pole and suddenly fire broke out,” said the guard.
ESCOM workers rushed to the scene and disconnected electricity temporarily to control the fire from spreading to other shops.
Councilor for the area, Paul Sitima, described the accident as a setback to the vendors.
“To the vendors, these were their farms and now that fire has destroyed the shops, they are back to square one. I humbly call upon government to intervene by providing them with soft loans to resuscitate their businesses,” said Sitima
In a district that has no firefighting equipment, it was not easy to physically put off the fire.
Council officials are yet to comment about the accident.
