The newly established Malawi Institute of Construction Technicians (MICT) says the construction industry is also contributing to deforestation.

MICT General Secretary, Julius Dangaliro, says bricklayers and carpenters use raw materials from trees in their trades.

“We are now seriously involved in re-afforestation because we have heavily contributed to deforestation,” said Dangaliro.

On Sunday the organization partnered with students at Chingoli CCAP Primary School in Mulanje in planting trees at the school.

This is the school that was heavily affected by the 2015 flood disaster and almost all buildings submerged in waters and currently construction of a new school is in progress, 500 meters away from the old school.

The school’s head teacher Charles Chirombo said the site where a new school is under construction is bare and it needs trees for protection from hostile wind.

We really thank MICT for supporting the school in afforestation and we will continue planting and caring the trees,” said Chirombo.

The trees have been planted at both the old and new schools.
