At least 148 radio listening clubs have been established in Mulanje under nutrition scaling up projects dubbed AFIKEPO and KULIMA implemented by Government of Malawi and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in the district with funding from the European Union.

Through these clubs, FAO nutritionist Caroline Kang’ombe says care groups will be learning what their colleagues in other areas or districts are doing.

“This initiative will address nutrition gaps and eventually leading to improved nutrition status at household level.

Nutrition promoter for Njema village, Martha Bandula, said before rolling out the two projects, most villagers had little knowledge on food preparation to come up with required six food groups.

“We expect to gain more knowledge through these radios and we really thank FAO for this,” said Bandula.

Principal Nutrition and HIV/AIDS Officer, Pearson Mphangwe, hailed distribution of radios which he said will help accelerate dissemination of nutrition messages to larger masses.

“As a council, we have challenges to take our messages to rural masses and with these radios we will now be recording nutrition programs and share them with radio listening clubs for their programing,” said Mphangwe.

Since 2017, Government and FAO have been supporting implementation of scaling up nutrition through EU-funded AFIKEPO and KULIMA projects in Mulanje district.
