Heavy Rains Damage Property in Neno

Heavy rains coupled with strong winds on Thursday cut off road network and destroyed property worth millions of Kwacha in the area of Traditional Authority Symon in Neno district.

Neno District Council Disaster Desk Officer, Alick Milanzi, told Zodiak Online that the rains which started on Wednesday up to Thursday morning destroyed over 46 houses rendering a population of 157 people homeless.

"We visited the area on Thursday to assess the situation and we found out that buildings, road network and tress are the most affected," said Milanzi.

Milanzi further said the homeless people who include child and elderly headed families are currently being asked to find for themselves shelter as none has been identified.

Urgent assistance being needed according to Milanzi are 276 bags of maize, 50kg each, 25 bottles of cooking oil, 30 roles of plastic sheets and on sanitation, as toilets have fallen down, water guard plastic sheets and 138 mosquito nets are required.

The Neno Council Disaster Desk Officer further said that "Lisungwi health centre has no electricity as of yesterday at 4 pm while the newly installed covid19 isolation centre has also gotten damaged; thereby, frustrating the efforts of containing the Corona virus outbreak."

Some of the property destroyed in the disaster include school blocks, Partners in Health warehouse, Covid19 isolation centre, electricity poles, road network, toilets, personal houses, maize bags and leaners text books.

Meanwhile the Neno council has submitted a report to the ministry of disaster affairs to action while also calling for non-governmental organizations to come to the rescue of the affected families.
