General Alliance Insurance Limited has laid a foundation stone for the construction of a K40 million worth wing at the Kachere Rehabilitation Center in Blantyre.

Malawi Against Physical Disability (MAP) Board chairperson, Tom Mwamadi, says the wing will increase number of patients at the facility from the current forty to fifty.

“It is an exciting time for MAP and Kachere Rehabilitation Center in particular because we have been looking for a donor to give more bedding space so that we can admit more people.

“We normally have a long waiting list of people wanting to come but our patients stay here for three months or so and we can only take a few, about forty at the moment.

“With this wing coming in, we will add up to ten. What it means is we will take in more people and we can serve the Malawi public better and it is very exciting for us,” he said.

General Alliance Insurance Limited General Manager, Karan Savjani, said this is time for people to stop relying on outside help but to start helping each other within the country.

He said even countries that help Malawi have problems with COVID-19; hence their decision to help the facility with the wing.

“We noticed there is a dire need. It is obvious we will not get funding from anywhere else. We discussed and realised this is the only way we can help the communities.

“It is our responsibility to do something and hopefully it will assist many people.

The project is expected to be completed in December this year.
