The Acting Chairperson of the organization, Isaac Petro Jekapu told Zodiak on Tuesday that radio and online lessons are not working for rural poor learners hence the need to act in the best interest of the children.

He stressed that children need to be reminded of class work.

"Leaving children idle for a long time is no good, let them have some lessons and assignments," said he.

Jekapu whose organisation is dominated by students from Malawi University of Science and Technology, MUST then called on children to be focused unlike doing bad behaviors that will ruin their future.

"Before the COVID 19, we have been conducting motivation talks in secondary schools, giving out gifts to learners to encourage them to remain in school.

But now as an organisation, we have been struggling to get support to reach out to rural poor learners to encourage them in the wake of the corona virus. We therefore ask for assistance from development partners and well-wishers," said Jekapu.

Recently, some teachers in Nsenjere and Ngabu zones in Chikwawa asked government to allow them to conduct lessons in villages whilst adhering to COVID 19 prevention measures, but this request hit the snag.

The Ministry of Education insisted that it will go ahead with radio lessons with a promise to distribute solar radio sets to poor households. This is yet to be fulfilled.
