The Department of Inclusive Education in the Ministry of Education has decried difficulties which children with diverse needs are facing to access COVID 19 information.

The Department's Deputy Director Noel Mwango told Zodiak on Thursday morning that are banking on special needs teachers and other disability related organizations to assist the children to adhere to the prevention measures.

"We are worried that children with special needs are not accessing COVID 19 messages," said Mwango.

As such, he said the department is working with relevant organizations like Malawi Union of the Blind, MUB, and Malawi National Association of the Deaf, MANAD to reach all children with COVID-19 information.

He added that they will engage special needs education teachers to assist such children to adhere to prevention measures in rural areas.

Meanwhile, Campaign for Health Sanitation and Hygiene, CAHESH says it is implementing a capacity building sanitation response in special needs education project to improve the economic wellbeing and social political integration of girls and women with disabilities.

The project’s coordinator Lucy Nkhoma has however called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to support people with disabilities in the wake of the COVID 19.

"We observed that there was a deficit in information to girls and women with disabilities especially on hygiene including menstrual cleanliness," said Nkhoma.

CAHESH is implementing this project with funding from Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council.

So far, 107 people have died of COVID-19 in the country.
