Ministry of education has recommended to the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 that only schools that can demonstrate COVID-19 preventive measures can re-open.

Education minister Agnes Nyalonje says they made the recommendation on Thursday at their latest meeting on the matter.

“Re-opening needs to happen but because of escalation of COVID-19 in the country, we need to look at case by case when opening is mentioned.

“Each institution has to demonstrate that they have sufficient prevention measures. Whether they are sufficient will be judged by the ministry of health through the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19,” she said.

Nyalonje said this is because the movement of learners and teachers themselves can encourage the transmission.

“At a time as a country we do not have as much testing capacity for COVID-19 as we would like to have, if it started to spread fast, the we are in deep problem so we have to balance that in education,’ Nyalonje said.

About five months have gone now since government ordered closure of learning institutions in an attempt to stop further spread of COVID-19.
