Agriculture officials in Lower Shire have vaccinated about 15, 000 cattle to protect the animals from Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) which has hit the area.

Program Manager for Shire Valley ADD Francis Mlewa told Zodiak on Sunday morning that they have also banned the slaughter and movement of animals.

According to Mlewa, the cases of FMD were recorded on 7 August this year in Livunzu EPA under Makhuwira area in Chikwawa district.

"The vaccination exercise has been done in Makhanga EPA in Nsanje and Livunzu and Mitole EPAs in Chikwawa," said Mlewa.

He added that the temporary ban on movement and slaughter of animals includes cattle, goats and pigs.

He further stated that all livestock farmers have also been reached with information on the outbreak through mobile vans and meetings with selected community leaders.

This comes when there are reports that the Mozambique government has banned the importation of meat from Malawi due to the Foot and Mouth Disease.

Such hiccups are there when farmers have all along been complaining of lack of reliable markets to sell their livestock.
