President Lazarus Chakwera says will physically deliver his maiden State of National Address (SONA) at parliament under strict COVID-19 preventive measures on 4th September, 2020.

His predecessor, Peter Mutharika, delivered his final SONA through a video recording on a basis of taking precautions against COVID-19 spread.

State House Press Secretary, Brian Banda, says they have received communication from parliament that among the preventive measures, opening will be held in marquees outside the house.

“President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera will indeed go to parliament. What we have been told by parliament is that they have put up in place measures that will help us handle business in the midst of COVID-19.

“We have been told that for the first time, the ceremony will take place outside parliament. We have been told that they have put a marquee and issues of social distance will be taken heed of and people will be encouraged to wash their hands and put on masks,” he said.

The president will be opening the house which will deliberate this year’s national budget.
