Communities in Chikwawa have questioned the seriousness of health officials in containing COVID-19 after allowing body of a person who died of COVID-19 to be ferried to Karonga, about 900 kilometers away.

One of the concerned community members, Amade Alide, told Zodiak Online on Sunday that Mitole Police Mobile Service Officer in Charge, Superintendent Brenard Nkhoma, who died of CoVID 19 on Saturday evening, was supposed to be buried within 24 hours.

"We are surprised on why the officials have taken the body to Karonga," questioned Alide.

He added that the pandemic can be contained if strong measures are enforced.

District Health Office Spokesperson, Settie Piriminta, said they decided to release the body after disagreement with family members on the burial place.

He insisted that the body has been disinfected and that only the driver and the wife have gone with the body to Karonga.

This is the first COVID 19 deaths with six new cases cumulatively hanging at 61 in the district.

Meanwhile, offices of Chikwawa and Nsanje district council have been closed temporarily for disinfection because of increased COVID 19 cases.
