Centre for Youth Development and Transformation (CYDT) through its project “Young Women Can Do It” has trained 20 girls and young women in tailoring in Thyolo.

CYDT Project Coordinator, Charles Kanyerere, told Zodiak Online the women are all school leavers.

“We have been registering an increase in prostitution in Luchenza Municipality and our findings pointed at inactiveness in economic activities as the main reason behind this transactional sex, hence equipping these women with tailoring skills so that they become economically empowered,” said Kanyerere.

He said CYDT will be supporting the women with some raw materials up until they become financially stable.

The group’s leader, Brenda Chibisa, said the women are now going home skillfully equipped having learnt sawing fashion dresses, masks and pads.

“Time for prostitution as a source of income is gone and I urge all women who depend on prostitution to think beyond this illicit trade and find other means of earning their living,” said Brenda.

She also called upon married women to find something other than depending on their husbands on anything.

According to Kanyerere, the project is financially supported by National Democratic Institute (NDI).
