District Medical Officer, Dr. Lloyd Njikho, says 76 health workers from public, mission and private health facilities in the district have been attacked by COVID-19 since the outbreak of the pandemic last year.

Dr. Njikho who said after receiving a consignment of medical and sanitary materials from ECHO-COVID-19 project on Wednesday said the figure is quite alarming.

“As the DHO, we really thank our partners for the support they have rendered towards COVID-19 management but we still call for continued support for Personal Protection Equipment (PPEs) and treatment equipment,” said Dr. Njikho.

ECHO-COVID-19 Project Manager Chimwemwe Gremu said the support that includes soap, cloth and surgical face masks, chlorine, bacteriology pool testers and plastic basins and buckets is in response to calls for support from the district council towards COVID-19 management.

“Let me point out here that other sanitary materials; that’s soap, buckets and basins have also been sent to schools and markets said the whole donation is valued at K19.5 million,” said Gremu.
