Deputy spokesperson for Mangochi Police, Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi, told Zodiak Online on Tuesday that both incidents happened on Monday February, 22, 2021 in the areas of Traditional Authorities Bwananyambi and Mponda.

“In the first incident, it was heavily raining and lightning struck 5 people at Masuku in the area of Traditional Authority Bwananyambi, whereby two were pronounced dead upon arrival at Mulibwanji Community Hospital and left the other three with serious burn wounds,” said Daudi, who identified the dead as John Chicha and Tiyanjane Bakali both 23-years-old.

According to Sub Inspector Tepani Daudi, the deceased person in the second incident, is Bakili Chilembwe, 76, who met his fate while in his maize field.

“Chilembwe, who was with his two children, decided to hide in an unfinished building when rains started pouring heavily while they were farming, unfortunately lightning struck him where he was hiding,” explained Tepani Daudi.

She said, he was rushed to Koche Health Centre where death was pronounced upon arrival and postmortem results revealed that death was due to cardiogenic electric shock.
