Authorities in Mulanje have expressed worry with youths’ reluctance to observe COVID-19 prevention measures.

Group Village Headman Tambala in Traditional Authority Chikumbu attributed the challenge to misconception that young people are not prone to the virus.

“Some youths continue patronizing video shows where social distance is not observed and we rarely see them wearing face masks,” said GVH Tambala.

Director of Planning and Development at Mulanje District Council Ernest Kaphuka said the youths should not be left behind when disseminating COVID-19 messages.

“You know youths form large segment of the district’s population and it is imperative that we involve them in all our programmes,” said Kaphuka.

Health Promotion Officer at the District Health Office Chipiliro Mjojo said dissemination of correct COVID-19 messages to different communities including the youths is underway.

“We are on the ground clearing out misconceptions and misinformation relating to COVID-19 and one such issue is that of youths that they are not at risk of contracting coronavirus,” said Mjojo.

Recently, it was disclosed that majority of COVID-19 confirmed cases in Mulanje were youths aged between 20 and 35.

Meanwhile, a two-day review meeting which followed joint monitoring of a European Union funded ECHO-COVID-19 project implemented in Mulanje by Care Malawi International ended on Wednesday in Luchenza, Thyolo.

ECHO-COVID-19 Project Manager Chimwemwe Gremu said feedback from their partners (health, social welfare, community development and water sectors) indicate that the project has been supportive to the district council and the community at large.

“We have been providing capacity building to health workers, personal protective equipment and sanitary materials to the health and education sectors.

“We have also provided training and other items such as whistles, pushbikes, whistles, and reflectors to Area Civil Protection Committees (ACPCs) as the project also has a component of disaster risk reduction,” said Gremu.
