The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has tipped presiding officers and polling station operations officers on proper handling of election results ahead of June 29th local government by-election in Lalanje ward in Nsanje.

MEC Senior Electoral Services Officer Responsible for Logistics, Fyson Magalasi, says such a process is crucial in the delivery of a free fair, credible and effective election; hence, the need for the officers to handle it accordingly.

Today, MEC trained the officers in results management where the electoral body underscored the need for the officers to observe guidelines.

"This training is very important as you know each election is different from the other, every election has its own challenges.,” he said.

"The result management is quite crucial because we all expect for results when it comes to elections, you prepare for a year but just a day when you are processing the results that day remains crucial in the electoral process and in this regard, we are encouraging them to make sure all the results at polling station level are done as per expectations,” he said.

One of the presiding officers, Smart Mponya, described the training as "critical for a credible by- election."

In Nsanje Lalanje the by- election will be held following the death of DPP ward councilor Hashim Chimuti.

Elsewhere, a local government by-election will be held at Chikwembere ward in Blantyre while in Nkhatabay central a parliamentary by-election.
