Maoni Primary School in Mulanje Remains Closed

Maoni Primary School in Mulanje has remained closed for over a month after some irate parents beat up three teachers there on accusations that they were practicing Satanism.

Group Village Headman Chiuta whose area the school is located told Zodiak Online that the parents were angered with continued fainting of children at the school.

“So, in solidarity, all the teachers left the school as they feared for their lives,” said GVH Chiuta.

Director of Education, Youth and Sports at Mulanje District Council, Enock Chumachao, confirmed the development to Zodiak Online saying the teachers were living in a hostile environment.

“Apart from Satanism accusations, the community is also alleging that some teachers were mismanaging School Improvement Grants (SIG) because some of them had bought motorcycles but none came forward with evidence that the cash the teachers used to buy motorcycles was from SIG,” said Chumachao.

He, however, said the matter has been resolved and currently his office is receiving applications from teachers willing to teach at Maoni for classes to resume.
