Member of Parliament for Machinga Lukwenu, Bright Msaka, says physically challenged people are facing unique challenges that need special attention for them to avoid covid-19.

Msaka said this on Sunday at Machinga boma after distributing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as soap, plastic water buckets and masks to people with disabilities from his areas in corroboration with Joy Abilities Empowerment (JAE) an organization that supports people with disabilities.

The parliamentarian said most people will need someone to assist them which means it is almost impossible for them to maintain social distance, one of the measures to avoid the pandemic.

“So, we are happy to see that our people have received the kind of requirement needed for them to fight Covid-19 pandemic and we will continue to do this because their challenges are unique,” said Msaka.

He added: “With Covid-19, you need to keep social distance, but you also need someone else to assist you, and it is difficult to keep social distance to someone who is physically assisting you.”

JAE Country Director, Benardetter Vaz, said it is the wish of the organization to make sure those that are disabled and poor are helped as they have other burdens already before covid-19.

“We are just a small and new organization that is yet to secure funding from donors, but we will make sure that these people are helped,” said Vaz.

One of the 50 beneficiaries, Dorica Kang’oma Gomiwa, was thankful for the donation, saying it is her first time to receive PPEs since the pandemic started.

“I am a single parent, am facing a lot of challenges to take care of my kids, even this wheelchair am using is in bad condition, so this donation is timely,” said Gomiwa.

Machinga is one of the districts which is registering more cases of Covid-19 in this third wave reaching 40 cases per day.
