Teachers in the country say have gone the whole second academic term without getting personal protective equipment (PPE) from government for COVID19 prevention.

President of the Teachers Union of Malawi, Willie Malimba, has therefore asked government to make sure that the PPE for their safety and learners is available next term.

“This third wave is spreading very rapid. It is attacking both young learners and adults, including teachers. If you go to schools, you will find that the learners and teachers are affected; but government is doing nothing on the ground.

“We expect that after the two-week holiday, when we go back to school, the government will make sure that each and everything is in order. We are talking about water buckets and soap for learners and PPE for teachers,” he said.

Spokesperson in the ministry of education, Chikondi Chimala, says they are employing a holistic approach in making sure schools are safe from the pandemic.

“The aim is to ensure that the learners, teachers and surrounding communities are safe from COVID19. We are not looking at items individually. The response is wholesome, but we will make sure that these are available when schools reopen,” said Chimala.

Teachers and government have of late being at loggerheads over COVID19 risk allowance and provision of PPE for a long time now.
