The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has torn apart President Lazarus Chakwera’s Socio-Economic Recovery Plan (SERP), describing it as empty.

DPP Spokesperson, Shadreck Namalomba, says the Plan is not addressing the sufferings that Malawians are facing now.

Namalomba says president Lazarus Chakwera must revise the Socio-Economic Recovery Plan and set immediate solutions.

“The president must cut down on his travel, reverse the high salaries and benefits that he gave to himself and his cabinet and reduce the size of cabinet.

“He must also reduce the number of advisors to the president, evict from state house all extended members of his family feasting on public resources, stop stealing and abuse of public resources under his watch, remove VAT on essential goods such as cooking oil, provide bailout funds for SMEs and provide cash transfer to the most vulnerable Malawians,” he said.

Governance expert, Wonderful Mkhutche, is in agreement with the former governing party that recovery plan must provide short term solutions.

He, however, cast doubt that government will implement what the DPP has outlined “looking at the political environment that we have. There is some kind of antagonism between government and the opposition.”

Government spokesperson, Gospel Kazako, says the SERP is the best in bailing Malawians out of socio-economic hardships triggered by COVID19.

“It is a plan that is looking at agricultural sector. It is a plan that is looking at construction of secondary schools that will spur creation of jobs.

“Roads will start in essence. In fact, some have already started. What this means is that so many people will be employed and economy will now be moving,” he said.

President Chakwera said in his national address that success of the plan which will run up to 202 will depend on local and international cooperation in supply chain and adherence to COVID19 prevention measures.
