Destiny College of Leadership Development Studies in Balaka has embarked on "plant a tree initiative" for its students and standard 6 primary school pupils.

As part of cooperate social responsibility response, Apostle Andrew Mankhanamba, who is national coordinator, says the college has targeted to plant 4000 trees all districts where their students reside from with each student getting 50 seedlings.

Mankhanamba says the college in collaboration with International Christian Youths, District education office and Gull University, will monitor the trees for three years as a sustainable way to see the "Plant a tree initiative" fruitful.

One of the students, Annie Assan, said she will look after the trees not because of the grades but because she wants to preserve the environment.

Balaka does not have a gazetted forest and plantation and according to assistant district forestry officer, James Chambo, says, Balaka is expected to plant 2million trees this year.
