Road accidents have claimed lives of over 200 people in the just ended year, 2021 in some three southern region districts of Blantyre, Mwanza and Neno.

South West Police Region Commissioner, Elobiam Banda, disclosed this on Wednesday during a Regional Executive Committee meeting where he said among the lost lives, 25 were motor bicycle operators, 8 cyclist and 76 were pedestrians.

He attributed the development to lack of adherence to road traffic rules among most road users in the country.

"Despite the region registering a general decrease of crime rate by 25 percent in the year ending 2021, the loss of over 200 lives is of great concern to us. This has largely come about due to lack of adherence to road traffic regulations among most road users, particularly the motor bicycle operators," he said.

Banda also expressed displeasure over increased mob justice cases in the year where some members of the public vented their anger on the police by setting alight a number of police infrastructures.

He however revealed that the region registered a decline of crimes in the year from 7, 118 cases to 6, 703 cases representing a 6 percent decline.

On his part, Chairperson for the South West Policing Region, Syd Asif Gillan called on consented efforts with all stakeholders to intensify awareness among the general public on the prevention of road accidents in the country.

The South West Policing Region covers areas of Chileka, Limbe,Mwanza and Neno.
