Malawi Congress of Trade Union (MCTU) says it is at an advanced stage with its plans to carry out nationwide survey on the number of jobs government has created in the two years of its existence.

This follows the state president Dr Lazarus Chakwera's national address last week in which he indicated that so far, 997 423 of the 1 million jobs government promised have been created so far.

However, MCTU General Secretary, Madalitso Njolomole, has told Zodiak that his organization believes that its study will help the country to have a common position on the matter.

He said the Union has already finalized a concept note on the study which he said has been shared with its international partners for funding.

"There is a need for a clear clarification on what type of jobs they are whether permanent or temporary. On our part we would want the focus to be on permanent jobs.

“We believe the study will help in having a consolidated view point on the matter,” he said.

On Monday, Minister of Minister of labour, Vera Kantukule stated   during a press briefing that of the jobs created, 30 000 are from the education sector, 13 000 in security institution, 88 000 in the construction sector, 12 360 in the health sector, 19, 019 in local government and over 160 000 has been created by the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF)

Government has been facing intense pressure from the general public for it to substantiate its claims on the umber of jobs it has created.
