Authorities are planning to permanently move 3, 000 people from nine villages in Chikwawa after the recent Tropical Storm Ana razed down their houses.

Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) Charles Kalemba says it is pleasing that people of Kanseche in Lundu area have voluntarily agreed to relocate.

“I think you have seen for yourself; the flash floods demolished all houses here and the borehole. People can never stay here.

“We are happy that people have on their own shown that interest to settle in safer places. What remains now is to finalize the consultations and identification of partners to construct new houses for the people,” said Kalemba.

On the other hand, the DODMA Commissioner has asked district councils to stop keeping food and non-food items in warehouses but rather taking them to camps so that flood survivors can be assisted with urgency.

“We are grateful that various countries including Japan, China, Malawian companies, organizations, religious institutions and individual well-wishers have been donating different items to improve the living standards of the people. Let these items go to the people,” explained the Commissioner.

Chikwawa District Commissioner Ali Phiri said his office is still engaging different stakeholders to relocate the people.

“On food distribution to the camps, poor road network and inadequate lorries to carry the relief items from 30 toner trucks to camps are some of the challenges rocking the process considering that it is impossible for trucks to go to other areas,” said DC Phiri.

One of the flood survivors from Kanseche, Luka John said while confirming that they want to relocate, there is need for government and development partners to provide them with food.

Chikwawa was the most hit district by Tropical storm Ana.
