Road Accident Kills 2, Injures 13 in Thyolo

Two people have died with 13 others injured in Thyolo after a vehicle which they were traveling in involved in an accident.

Thyolo Police Officer In-charge Assistant Commissioner Ulemu Kaluwa, has told Zodiak on Tuesday that the accident occurred at Naming'omba tea plantation along Bvumbwe-Thyolo road.

Kalua says the driver Yohane Majanga, aged 38, of Sumbuleta village, T/A Machinjiri in Blantyre who was driving motor vehicle registration number TO 5053 Toyota D4D minibus from the direction of Bvumbwe heading Thyolo Boma, lost control due to excessive speed.

"Brief facts are that the said driver was driving from the direction of Bvumbwe heading Thyolo Boma. Upon arrival at Naming'omba Tea Plantation, he lost control due to excessive speed; hence, he swerved to the extreme near side, in the process the rear offside tire got burst, eventually the vehicle overturned twice," he said.

Kaluwa added that following the impact, Steward Mwakapenda aged 32 and Magret Gunda 35, died whilst receiving treatment at Thyolo District Hospital.

Meanwhile, Thyolo Police Officer in Charge has appealed to motorists mainly passenger vehicle drivers to prioritize safety of passengers and desist from competing on the roads of Malawi.

"We are losing lives of people in a way that can be avoided," he appealed.
