As mass polio vaccination exercises will start administering Polio vaccines to children under the age of five from Monday to Thursday, Machinga district health office has set a target of 138 730 children with the exercise.

District Health Spokesperson, Clifton Ngozo made the announcement on Friday at an Emergency District Executive Committee (DEC) meeting saying they decided to involve the development committee and civil society organizations to seek logistical assistance.

He further said the first round of the vaccine administration will use over K40 million which they have been given by the government.

"We want these organizations and district council officers to assist us with cars to transport our officers to the site. We were given 40 million kwacha but it's for allowance for our officers on the ground and fuel purchase," said Ngozo.

Ngozo says the exercise will be door to door using Health Surveillance Assistants, as they are currently conducting awareness campaigns to avoid myths that surround such vaccination exercises.

Chairperson for Machinga Civil Society Network, Chipiliro Phiri says they will take advantage of their services to disseminate Polio vacation massages to the rural majority of the district.

"It is our role to support government in there initiatives as it is for the people as we are. We need to spread the messages especially during the weekend so that people should be aware of this vaccination campaign," noted Chipiliro Phiri.
