Explosive Device Kills Machinga Boy

A 17-year-old boy has died after an explosive device exploded in his hands on Tuesday along Chikala Hill in Machinga close to a Malawi Defense Force motor firing camp where he went to burn charcoal with his friends.

Eastern Region Assistant Police Spokesperson, Tiwonge Kayenda says the boy, Bob Robin, upon arrival at the hill, separated from his friends to collect logs to be used in charcoal burning.

Kayenda says Robin held the explosive device out of his knowledge, which exploded leading to serious internal and external injuries. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at St Luke's Hospital.

"It is true that a boy aged 17, has died after a certain device exploded in his hands at Chikala Hills. He went to burn charcoal with his friends and unfortunately the incident happened when he separated with his friends," said Kayenda.

She has appealed to the public around the hills to avoid going to the hills as this is not the first time for such incident to happen.
