Thyolo UTM Governor Faulted For Allocating Space Outside Market

Thyolo District governor for (UTM) party Charles George has been faulted for allegedly allocating space to fish vendors outside Thyolo flea market.

Thyolo market fish vendors Chairperson Charles Yiweni told Zodiak on Saturday that some vendors have been plying their business along the street, a thing which affected sales of those inside the designated space.

Yiweni has, however, accused Charles George Thyolo district governor of allocating space to these fish vendors along the street.

He added that this week, George and some Kabaza operators assaulted committee members who were trying to remove the vendors to go inside the designated area.

"We went there to peacefully ask our friends to go inside where there is enough space for fish business. While there, the Kabaza operators started beating us. We noted that the issues have turned ugly, went to police for the reports to access medication.

"Before we went back to police, the DC called us in a meeting where they really helped us. In the meeting, all the stakeholders questioned the conduct of the governor whom they accused of abusing his powers," Yiweni said.

But his reaction, George dismissed the allegations, saying people are accusing him of being behind the vendors in question because he also plies his business close to the vendors.

"What I know is that vendors just come here and ply their businesses along the street. It's not the party that give them a go ahead. If you move around, you would see that there are a lot of people who are doing that not only fish vendors. But because one of them is here where we operate our business, they accuse me of being behind them," he said.

Meanwhile, Thyolo District Commissioner Douglas Moffat said after meeting with the multiparty Liaison Committee, the council has intervened by writing both parties to follow rules at the market.

"It was observed that there was confusion as to how leaders should perform their roles and where they should start and end. So in this regard, it was agreed that the market committee which was duly elected should proceed to hold responsibility of allocating vendors inside the market and making sure that other vendors who would not comply to this order should be advised to do so," Moffat said.

However, Zodiak has established that Thyolo district council is collecting revenue from these vendors along the street.
