Nsanje Police Under Fire Over Alleged 'Missing' Motorcycle

A man in Nsanje, Evason Tsamba, has taken the district's traffic police officers to task over alleged failure to return his motorcycle they allegedly impounded in the afternoon hours of Friday, June 17, 2022.

Tsamba claims the traffic police officers impounded the motorbike, a Jelin, whose value is said to be over K2 million on grounds that he did not put on a helmet.

He claims on Wednesday June 22, 2022, the traffic police officers, ordered him to pay K30,000 which he allegedly did after his efforts to negotiate for a lower sum of K10,000 was shot down.

"I paid the money as ordered. This time they had yet to issue a General Receipt (GR) for the payment. One of the officers was keeping the GR.

"Two male officers then took me to a room which is used to keep impounded motorcycles to identify my motorbike as instructed by Nsanje police station's Senior Traffic Personnel, Masiti.

"The Senior Traffic Police Officer gave the two junior officers a key which they were using to identify my motorcycle. One of motorbikes, a LIFO, responded, so they insisted that it was mine, I declined.

"I tried to reason with the Senior Traffic Police Officer who impounded my motorbike that mine is a Jelin, black in colour not a LIFO and I told him that I was in possession of the keys but he was not corporative.

"He then told the officers to surrender the cash to me and said I can go and report anywhere," alleged Tsamba.

Tsamba decried the alleged conduct of the traffic police officers claiming it was not professional citing usage of force in executing their duties.

He thus vowed not to relent saying he wants his motorcycle back.

The district's Police Spokesperson, Sub Inspector, Agnes Zalakoma, has dismissed the allegations saying the motorcycle is safe.

"We are keeping the motorcycle cycle because the owner is yet to pay for his traffic offence," said Zalakoma.
