Goliati Police Officers Accused of Corruption

Some community members around Goliati Police Unit have accused police officers of soliciting money from suspects who have resorted to settle their matters with complainants by arbitration.

Village Headman Majanga and one of his subjects Gideon Chipala told Zodiak Online that last week, some law enforcers allegedly demanded money ranging from K20, 000 to K80, 000 including valuables to release their relations Patrick Meja and Maxwell Mponela.

Goliati police oversight committee chairperson James Yuda, also claims that they have received the concerns and that communities are angry with the alleged corrupt practices at the Unit, calling on authorities to swiftly intervene.

"There have been several incidents where police are demanding money to release suspects. And yesterday, there could be an ugly scene where communities wanted to damage the police unit when officers also wanted some money from someone who committed a minor offence which was resolved through arbitration," he said.

Thyolo Police Spokesperson Amos Tione, says they are not aware of the issue, but indicated an investigation will be instituted.

"As Thyolo police the issue is being investigated," he said.
