The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) says Malawians in other areas will experience prolonged blackouts due to supply capacity challenges.

ESCOM says in a statement that the extended load shedding is due to circuit breakup involving a 132Kv transformer at Golomoti.

According to Kitty Chingota, ESCOM Public Relations Manager, occurrence of clouds has also affected the power output since solar panels cannot receive adequate sunlight.

Chingota further says a technical fault at the 20-Megawatt Golomoti solar power plant which is now down, has led to some areas to experience prolonged backouts.

"Let me assure customers that our engineers are working on this in order to bring back the power capacity," she said.

Consumer activist John Kapito says the country has not registered any significant change since the commissioning of the Golomoti power plant.

Malawi is facing back to back power outages after losing about 130 megawatts because of tropical storm Ana that damaged the Kapichira hydro station early this year.
