Teachers Strike Against TA Mposa

Lessons have been halted at Chirimba Community Day Secondary School in Machinga following a strike by teachers at the school due to misunderstandings between the teachers and Traditional Authority Mposa who allegedly insulted them over a bicycle which the chief's daughter benefited.

Chairperson for the school's Buffalo Bicycle Executive Committee Edward Mnenura says the traditional leader described the teachers as educated savages when they wanted to collect a bicycle from the chief’s daughter who was transferred to another school.

Mnenura alleges that TA Mposa told the teachers to move out of the school and the executive committee has been dissolved hence angering the teachers.

"The TA insulted me and the teachers, he even told them to move out of the school due to our request for him to bring us a bicycle which his daughter was using when she was our leaner," noted Mnenura.

Headteacher for the school, Nyarai Hamela says classes will resume only after discussing with district education authorities on the matter.

TA Mposa acknowledged the misunderstandings but has questioned basis of the strike saying the teachers would have invited him for a discussion on the matter.

"If they have issues with me, they could have called for a meeting rather than the step they have taken now. This is uncalled for," TA Mposa said.

Meanwhile, Machinga district education manager, Douglas Namikungulu says he is yet to receive complaints on the matter but commits he will engage the teachers to map the way forward.
