TA Kaledzera Appeals for Speedy Resumption of PWP

Traditional Authority Kaledzera of Phalombe has appealed to government to expedite processes for the resumption of public works programme popularly known as ‘Ntchito za mthandzi’ to avert people’s suffering owing to effects of natural disasters such as hunger.

Kaledzera told Zodiak Online on Tuesday that plans to resume implementation of the social protection initiative brought some relief among rural communities struggling with economic problems.

"Government did not disclose actual commencement of the resumption of the program almost two years after the program stalled in the country," lamented Kaledzera.

Kaledzera added that people in his area have now started relying on wild tubers in the wake of hunger, calling on the government to fast-track processes for the resumption of the program.

Spokesperson for National Local Government Finance Committee (NLGFC), Hamilton Chimala, says government intends to commence the program in October this year, targeting 435,000 across all councils at a tune of approximately $128 million dollars.

Malawi’s public works program provides short-term and labor-intensive employment to poor households.
