Former University Students on Primary School Learners Motivation Initiative

In a bid to curb high dropout rate among primary school learners in the country, a grouping of graduates from some of the country's universities has embarked on a primary school learners motivation initiative.

The grouping's executive director, under the banner Focus on Developing Mother Africa (FODEMA), Mack Kampira says they are targeting about ten schools in the country's three districts of the southern region namely Chiradzulu, Blantyre and Zomba.

He said this on Tuesday when the grouping awarded some best performing learners at Mombo primary school in Chiradzulu district.

"We conducted a survey last year and found out that about 36 percent of learners in these districts drop out of school due to lack of motivation," said Kampira.

He added that majority of them are girls who end up getting married at an early stage.

Deputy head teacher for the school, Amos Moyo hailed the grouping's gesture, adding it will help in motivating the learners to stay in school.

One of the awardees, a standard 8 learner at the school, Loveness Kanjinji, 13, said she has been inspired to work hard in class for her to realise her dreams of becoming a medical doctor in future.

The 20-member grouping comprises graduates from the country's major universities namely Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), Malawi University of Business and Applied Science (MUBAS) as well as the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).

Apart from offering career talks, the grouping presented various prizes such.as text books, pencils and mathematical instruments to best performers.
