Neno district has launched its oral cholera vaccination campaign today with a call for people to continue adhering to hygiene measures in a bid to ensure continued prevention of the disease.

Neno District Environmental Health Officer, Magret Mikwamba underscored on the need for partners to help in the campaign as they target to vaccinate one hundred and sixty seven thousand people.

"Today we have lunched the campaign for all the fifteen health facilities we have here, so we advise people to come and take their dose," she said.

The DEHO further disclosed that, the district is registering the cases due to people's reluctance to drink water from boreholes, arguing that the water is salty.

Many people, especially in lower Neno refuse to drink water from boreholes, they say its salty so they prefer to drink from unsafe sources thereby getting infected.

In her remarks, Partners in Health Chief Operating Officer, Basimenye Nhlema expressed optimism that people in the district will embrace the vaccine.

"As Partners in Health, we encourage people to respond to outbreaks by following medical set procedures such as taking up well tested and tried vaccines, it is important", she said.

She then asked people to continue adhering to hygiene measures saying the vaccine alone cannot help combat the disease.

Neno District Education Manager Sonnex Likharuwe pleaded with authorities to drill more boreholes in rural schools to increase access to potable water.

Meanwhile, Ruth Dausi who took her first dose of the two dosed solution, encouraged people to take up the dose, saying she felt no side effects.
