Balaka Launches Its Third Phase Polio Vaccination

Director of Health and Social Services in Balaka district, Dr. Eugene Katenga Kaunda, has appealed to people in the district to go in large numbers to vaccinate their under five children, who are often prone to the Polio disease.

He observed that Balaka has previously been heavily affected with cases of disability partly because of parental negligence and misconceptions.

"For example, we have always experienced resistance from people in Kwitanda here because people are engrossed in misconceptions surrounding vaccines. And this is why we decided the launch should happen right here as part of sensitisation campaign," said Kaunda.

He said the District Health Office aim is for the vaccine to reach every corner of Balaka to protect life.

Council Chairperson Pharaoh Kambiri, while taking his turn during the launch of the third phase under five Polio vaccine, urged people to rush to the hospital once they observe strange poliosis signs in under five children for early treatment.

"We want people to do away with myths and realize the importance of this vaccine which costs government a lot of money every year to protect children from such diseases," said Kambiri.

Health promotion officer for the district, Mercy Nyirenda, has told Zodiak, on Thursday, at Kwitanda health centre, the third phase is targeting eighty eight thousand under five children in the district which will run from Thursday to Sunday this week.

Balaka DHO successfully achieved the first and second phases of Polio vaccination exercise with a 99 percent target.
