Neno Man Sentenced to 14 Years for Defilement
A First Grade Magistrate’s Court sitting as a mobile court in Neno district has today convicted and sentenced a 33-year-old man, Dyson Machemba, to 14 years imprisonment with hard labor for defiling a 10-year-old standard 6 girl.
The court through Neno police prosecutor, Sub Inspector Golden Kakoma, heard that Machemba committed the offense at Mpakati village on the July 20 this year.
Passing her judgement, Her Worship Margret Khobili meted out the sentence saying these matters are becoming common; hence, a need for stiffer punishments to deter would be offenders.
"Cases of defilement are rampant now and people who are supposed to take responsibility of protecting the young girls are the very same people abusing them, this must stop", she said.
The convict contravened Section 138 of the Penal Code which prohibits sex, either consensual or by force to minors below the age of 16 years.
Machemba hails from Mpakati village in the area of chief Chekucheku.
Community Action for Sustainable Development (CASDO) with funding from Save the Children moved the court to Muonekera primary school in a bid to promote children's rights and education through the Securing Children's Rights through Education and Protection project (SCREP).
