Fired Thyolo Adult Literacy Instructors Demand Pay

Around 200 adult literacy instructors in Thyolo have bemoaned delay by the government to pay them their 2017-2019 honoraria arrears after they were fired for under-qualification.

Two of them, John Maula and Manson Januwale claimed the government owes them K300, 000 of arrears each and expect it to be squared as soon as possible.

"They promised to pay us the arrears in 2019. They arranged that we would receive through our fellows who are working now, but until now there is nothing", said Maula.

Januwale added that "we have been going the council where they say to have sent the details to the Ministry, but to no avail".

Thyolo District Community Development Officer Joseph Banda says they submitted everything to treasury, but indicated the government owes them K140, 000 each.

Ministry of Social Welfare and Community Development spokesperson Fred Simwaka has told Zodiak Friday that verification exercise for all the instructors is underway to have them receive their honoraria arrears through government payroll.

"Government has decided to introduce those people on payroll not as wage or salary, but still more maintaining status of honoraria. But before we do that, for them to be on payroll they need to have employment numbers. So for that to happen, normally we conduct verification exercise", he said.

Government is in the process of commencing payment of the K15, 000 honoraria to the instructors after the verification which has so far been done in two districts.
