The government has set this November to meet paramount chiefs in a process of establishing the Paramount Chief Council which would be charged to resolve a backlog of chieftaincy wrangles in the country.

Recently, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development said putting up the Council would be ideal following the overwhelming chieftaincy disputes that legal opinion has failed to resolve since they are grounded in cultures.

The ministry's spokesperson, Anjoya Mwanza, says the process has delayed to pave way for the chiefs to attend their annual cultural celebrations which are held between July to October.

"The Ministry is waiting to meet the Paramount Chiefs after they have finished conducting their annual cultural celebrations. You know the time from July to October end, each tribal group conducts their annual celebrations and the respective Paramount Chiefs get busy with these celebrations. As soon they are through in November, this activity will be done", Mwanza said.

Meanwhile, Mzuzu based culturalist Aupson Ndabazake Thole, on Thursday, commended the government for the move, but advised that the paramount chiefs apolitical to make valid and widely accepted decision on matters such as chieftaincy wrangles.

"It is a good idea. But there is only one challenge because the Paramount Chiefs are in most cases initiated by the government. So the base is to have a good establishment of the council whose decisions are respected by all," he advised.

According to Mwanza, the number of chieftaincy disputes now stands at 15 in the country.
