Sixteen inmates at the Blantyre prison have been awarded with certificates in leadership after undergoing three years of training by the All Churches Leadership Institute.

The Institute trained the inmates under the Timothy Leadership Training Institute Program and graduation ceremony was held on Thursday at the prison.

Dr. Gloria Makunje, the Institute’s president, expressed satisfaction with the programme.

"We had a good number of students but a lot of them dropped out. I am happy to see the remaining ones graduating today,” she said.

The prison’s officer-in-charge, Thomas Damba, commended the Institute for supporting the reformation efforts towards the inmates.

One of the graduates who is serving a 12years jail term for the offence of defilement, said the training has given him strength.

"When I was convicted, I thought my life was over but after attending to the training, my hope was restored and I'm a changed person ready to preach the word of God," he said.

The Institute started its operations in the country in 2013 but started offering leadership training to inmates in prisons across Malawi in 2015 with an aim of imparting leadership skills in preaching the words of God.
