As majority of women are expecting to get their proceeds from Village Savings and Loan (VSL) groups this month end, ward councilor for Chilaweni in Blantyre, Carol Mdala has advised women in the country to support their husbands in prioritizing the needs of their families.

Speaking after whistle stop tour marking 16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Blantyre on Tuesday, Mdala said families need to utilize the available funds to support their children to attend school and live a better life.

“Please let us use this VSL money and bonuses we will get this month end to build our families. All the resources we get must be used in the best interest of our households,” said Mdala.

She said this when officials from Blantyre district council, police officers and non-governmental organisations, (NGOs) leaders visited Lunzu, Lirangwe, Mdeka and Nkhalamba areas in Blantyre to sensitize people on the importance of ending GBV.

At the event, communities were reminded to stop all forms of abuse against women and girls saying such acts like rape and defilement are barbaric and uncalled for.

This comes when Blantyre Gender Officer, Agnes Napwanga is complaining of rampant divorces, as out of 17 GBV Cases recorded monthly, half are divorces.

On her part, president of Young Women Christian Association of Malawi, Alice Bwanausi asked the citizens to report all cases of GBV so that perpetrators are punished.

“I think we are winning. We are making progress in ending GBV. We now have laws, people are able to report and offenders punished,” explained Bwanausi.

She then encouraged community leaders to be vigilant in protecting and promoting rights of women and girls in Malawi.
