Crime Rate Decreases in Mangochi

Mangochi Police Station has registered an overall 16 Percent crime decrease in the just ended year 2022.

The station's spokesperson, Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi, said in 2021, a total number of 1, 773 of criminal cases were recorded while in 2022 the station registered only 1490 cases.

Tepani Daudi said their statistics also show that defilement cases have slightly gone down as in 2021, 88 cases were registered comparing to 80 which had been reported in 2022.

However, Tepani Daudi said rape cases have increased from 8 in 2021 to 14 cases in 2022, according to Tepani Daudi.

She said the great concern is that most of the perpetrators of rape cases were traditional healers who take advantage of their clients when they are consulted for treatment.

"The report has also singled out the tendency by mothers who permit defilement of their daughters in the name of securing their marriages," she explained.

Tepani Daudi also said that 872 cases were completed in court in the year and 518 perpetrators of crime were given stiffer penalties and are serving jail terms including two mothers who are serving 5-year jail term each for permitting defilement of their daughters respectively.
