Newly elected chairperson for Machinga Civil Society Organizations (CSO) Network, Belinda Somanje Chimombo has cited lack of coordination among Machinga district council secretariat, political and local leaders and CSO's as a major contributing factor to the district's poor result in the 2022 Local Authority Performance Assessment (LAPA).

The district earned 48 percent, representing an automatic disqualification from the list of beneficiaries on Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) funds in 2024.

Chimombo, who is the executive director for Youth Impact was speaking today on the sidelines of a Machinga CSO Network election which saw her elected to the position, to be deputised by Chifuniro Moyo of NANES.

She stresses the district continues to lag behind in developmental projects as people in rural areas are not empowered to monitor progress of particular projects, hence resulting in substandard developmental works, which she vowed to address.

"We have for long failed to attain meaningful development in the district as our people are not part of such developments, that is why we have failed," noted Chimombo.

Last week, spokesperson for Machinga district council, Martin Chiwanda, disclosed that the council has penned the ministry of local government to review the district's results in the Local Authority Performance Assessment report, in an attempt to be on list of beneficiaries of the GESD Funds.
