Mac Williams Mhone who has invested K150 million in freight business under the name Universal Freight Solutions said the creation of decent jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities as touted in the vision can be achieved if the government supports them. He is an employer of over 18 people across the country.

He said this at the grand opening of the office complex and warehouse at Kameza in Blantyre.

Mhone said: “At this time when businesses are rocking in an economic downturn, the government remains a consistent and stable market to offer business, and as young entrepreneurs, we need to be supported with business, either supplying goods or constructions projects.”

The government of Malawi spends at least 70 percent of its national budget on procurement and despite a deliberate policy of the Government to provide maximum opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises to participate as suppliers, most indigenous businesses claim otherwise.

“If we get more businesses, this will spur economic inclusivity, and offer decent jobs to our people. All the money we are otherwise losing by giving contracts to foreign companies, is just helping us lose the forex that we need,” he said.  

Funani Seyani from TATA Malawi said, “now that the company has launched its own premises at Kameza with a warehouse, it instils confidence in us, as clients. We deal with heavy machinery and once shipped in the country, it means we can even assemble from this space.”
