The training was supported by a local Non-Governmental Organization-Othakharhakha Foundation.

Director of Othakharhakha Foundation Ida Puliwa Mwango told Zodiak Online that most divorced women suffer serious socioeconomic challenges and some end up suffering from mental illnesses.

She said it is against this background that her organization decided to support the eight divorced teen mothers economically with tailoring skills.

“Actually we started this initiative in 2016 as part of our women economic empowerment programme, we want these women to be financially independent, self-reliant and be resilient to gender based violence,” said Mwango.

The teen mothers have received start-up capital that include sewing machines and other tailoring materials for their tailoring businesses.

“Let me explain that after one year, they will pay back to Othakharhakha Foundation the cost of sewing machines for us to support other women as well,” said Mwango.

The Class President Promise Maononga said they have been struggling to take care of their children after being divorced and she thanked the organization for equipping them with tailoring skills.

“I am sure our lives will not be the same after six months and we are very much thankful to Othakharhakha for this gesture,” said Maononga.

The core activities of Othakharhakha Foundation are education, youth and women empowerment, health, agriculture, gender and environmental conservation.
