Mulanje District Council Launches the 2022/2023 GESD Projects

Construction of projects under Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) for the 2022/2023 financial year has been officially launched in Mulanje district.

The council is starting with eight projects and these are Chanunkha and Waruma school blocks, Tcherekere irrigation scheme, Makadzombo box culvert, Chitakale market shelter, Mussa health post, Chambe reticulated piped water, Chimwamesi protection river bank and Makala concrete pad.

District Commissioner David Kayiwonanga Gondwe speaking with Zodiak Online on Thursday after launching three projects said the council, the contractors and communities who are owners of these projects have different roles to play on tto ensure that the projects are not below standard.

“The district council role is to supervise and monitor the projects, the contractor to build quality structures, observe and work within agreed time and community leaders to join in monitoring the projects,” said Gondwe.

On his part, the District Council Chairperson Thokozani Namoyo challenged the community leaders to ensure that there is enough security to the building materials.

“We do not want to see cement, iron sheets, nails or any other building materials growing wings or legs on these projects and what we expecting are quality projects,” said Namoyo.

Parliamentarian for Mulanje South Constituency Santigo Phiri whose constituency is a beneficiary of two projects; a classroom block at Chanunkha Community Day Secondary School and Chitakale market rehabilitation warned against political interference on the two projects. “I will not tolerate interference in these projects especially on technical specifications,” said Phiri.

Chairperson of Chitakale Market Committee Wyson Paipi thanked the district for including the market on the list of 2022/2023 GESD projects.

“While we appreciate this project, you should not forget the dumping site which you have been promising us, as you can see the litters over there,” said Paipi.

According to the District Commissioner David Kayiwonanga Gondwe, three more projects; staff house at Ndanga maternity wing, cassava processing factory and five market toilets are at procurement stage.

Mulanje District Council received MK760 million for the 2022/2023 GESD projects.
